Yellowstone Photography Opportunities Are Legendary

By Flora Vinson

Yellowstone photography opportunities are legendary. With so much spectacular scenery and incredibly biodiversity, this crown jewel of the national park system is a popular destination for both amateur and professional photographers. The area is rich in history, culture and natural beauty and boasts of an amazing array of flora and fauna.

One amazing feature in the park is the Old Faithful geyser which erupts hourly to the delight of tourists from around the world. Other geothermal features of interest include mud pots, hot springs and additional geysers. The Mammoth Hot Springs are especially colorful, near the Mammoth visitor center.

The area's scenery is impressive. From towering 10,000 foot peaks to expansive valleys and rushing streams, photo opportunities are ever present. Autumn foliage of aspens interspersed with conifers make for great fall pictures, while heavy snow makes nice winter wonderland shots in the colder months. Wildflowers in the spring and scores of tourists in the summer interacting with animals, also make for photo shoot opportunities.

Wildlife images are especially easy to capture. Majestic bull elk, impressive bison and stately moose are all found in the area with frequency. Black bear and grizzly bears roam the park inviting tourists to film them in their native habitat, hopefully from a safe distance. Other predators like gray wolves, coyotes and mountain lions are also present within the park boundaries.

Birds like great grey owls, trumpeter swans, bald eagles and white pelicans can also be attractive draws. Colorful harlequin ducks and rare whooping cranes may be found by those who search diligently and are blessed by a little extra luck. With so many avian species, the area is a nice place to snap photos of birds ranging from tiny song birds to large birds of prey.

Yellowstone photography gives visitors a chance to hone their skills while enjoying one of America's premier natural wonders. The park's incredibly scenery and abundant wildlife make it a photographer's paradise. The park is a great destination all year long, although access is more limited during the winter season due to heavy snow in some areas.
