By Megan Edwards

The first thing to note about flute music for beginners is that you have get your flute serviced by a quality repair person. Flutes are a bit like Swiss watches, if you don't keep them in fine fettle they can sound cranky, stiff and give you finger cramps.

Some of the problems that old flutes have are leaking pads, shrunken bobbers, keys that are out of adaptation and mobile parts that are bent. You can't be an effective fluting player on such an tool.

A good local woodwind technician can repair your fluting for less then $60, an investment you won't mind for the months of frustration it will certainly save you. Call up flutists in your area and ask them about their favorite technicians. Also get additional information from them about fluting lessons, fluting choirs, concerts given by local or visiting artists and all the rest.

Once your fluting is in shape, you can start the search for a good teacher. Again use the phone. Call up the local conservatory or community euphony school. Get in touch with a private school or a college with a euphony program.

Best, get in touch with the music department of your local university. They will be able to give you a list of the best, the most respected fluting professionals that they know. Most of the students who join the euphony department come from the private studios of professional teachers.

Another thing to avoid in flute music for beginners is to self-teach yourself. You will only be repeating the mistakes and imbibing the bad habits that have been known to plague the self taught for the last two hundred years. On your own, you will take years to know how to exit from crescendo to forte without going sharp. A teacher can tackle that in 5 minutes.
