Leonardo DiCaprio: Actor and Environmentalist

By Sredna Nesegleh

Leonardo DiCaprio started his career in commercials, but has went on to create a career that most other actors are jealous of. While some of his more classic movies are not those that he is most proud of, it is the ones that have helped him to get where he is today and something can be said for that. From being booted off of Romper Room for being too disruptive to his status as "king of the world" in Titanic to his latest offerings, Leonard DiCaprio has crafted a career for himself that is sure to keep him in the forefront of movie history for many years to come.

The Beginning
Leonard DiCaprio was born on November 11, 1974. He was the only son of Irmelin and George DiCaprio. He grew up in Los Angeles and lived with his dad for the most part, after his parents divorced when he was one. He began his career very early-even before he began elementary school and this is largely due to the encouragement of his father.

Career Beginnings
DiCaprio's start was in commercials and educational films and he was in the television show, Romper Room, until he was booted off of the show for being too disruptive. He was cast in the short lived television version of Parenthood in 1990 and had several small roles on shows such as Lassie and Roseanne. His most popular and well known television role, however, was the one as Luke Brower on the ABC sitcom, Growing Pains.

Movies and Leonardo
In 1992, DiCaprio was cast in What's Eating Gilbert Grape? with Johnny Depp. He earned award nominations for this role, but it was just the beginning of the success that he was going to enjoy. Other movies that he was in during the 1990's include The Quick and the Dead, Total Eclipse, and Romeo + Juliet. His roles were very diverse, from being a homosexual to a love interest to a brother, DiCaprio has shown a very big range of ability that has kept him in great demand for years. In 1997, he received the role that boosted his career the most-that of Jack in the movie, Titanic 1997.

Titanic and More
Titanic can be pointed to as the role that really brought Leonardo DiCaprio into the movie world. Although it is a role that he often scoffs at now, it is the one that he is most recognized and well loved for. He was cast in many movies since that blockbuster hit, however, including The Man in the Iron Mask, Catch Me If You Can, Gangs of New York and The Aviator. Leonardo has received many different award nominations and many awards, including the Golden Globe for Best Actor for his role in The Aviator. The newest movies are even more popular including Inception, J.Edgar, and his upcoming The Great Gatsby.

Personal and Environmental Side
Gisele Bundchen and Bar Repaeli are two women that Leonardo has been linked to over the years, but his relationships tend to fizzle after a while. He is committed to many different environmental causes however. From being more environmentally friendly to animal rescue, DiCaprio has been praised by several environmental groups and continues to work to bring attention to the environmental issues that are part of the world.

The environment and film are two of DiCaprio's main interests and his is very committed to both in many different ways. Leonardo has come from doing just television commercials to producing and starring in multi-million dollar movies. His career is one that has been steadily growing and it will be fun to continue to watch his career continue to grow and mature. Keep an eye out for what Leonardo continues to offer to the world at large and to movie watchers just like you.
