As The Love For Zombies Grow, So Do The Sales Of Zombie T-Shirts

By Larson York

This may be a totally false and biased statement, but I really feel that there has been little else to take hold of the world's fascination quite like zombies. It wasn't even a gradual transition, either. Every time some new and excellent source of zombie fiction emerges, it captivates the attention of the masses like little else can. The only thing that can compete with zombie mania are sparkling vampires and boy wizards, and neither of those really fit into the "horror" category, do they? With this huge love for the rotting dead, the sales of zombie t-shirts have blown through the roof.

Even though there were several movies about zombies before '68, George Romero's "Night Of The Living Dead" is the film that really catapulted zombies into the imagination of a nation. Yes, it was very much a cult hit...but the fans of the movie were stalwart and devoted. They were guys like me, who wore their NotLD zombie t-shirts until they were covered in holes.

Romero followed the cult hit status of "Night of the Living Dead" with two more movies to make an amazing zombie trilogy. What was so awesome about these films is that it gave an epic world view of how society might fall apart if confronted with a devastating event such as a zombie apocalypse. These movies were "Dawn of the Dead" and "Day of the Dead" respectively, and I still have my zombie t-shirts from both of these flicks.

It took about two decades before the world took a serious look at zombies in horror flicks again. In 2004, my personal favorite Romero movie was remade by Zach Snyder. "Dawn of the Dead" was received with awesome reviews from critics and moviegoers alike. Many of the hardcore Romero nuts wanted to make a stink over the "fast zombies", but that's just being silly. There were plenty of people running out and buying zombie t-shirts and other merchandise from the movie afterward.

Less than a decade later, zombies are still on fire with popularity. Two new franchises have been developed for print, and are currently in development for film. "The Walking Dead" is currently in its second season and seeing massive responses in popularity. Max Brooks' huge bestseller "World War Z" is being made into a movie with Brad Pitt as the star. In a year, I bet we'll see zombie t-shirts on everyone of all ages. So long to the vampires and wizards, because it's time to get gory.
