Music From Around The World

By Petra Berg

World music describes music from around the world. The pop sound is produced mostly in North America and Europe so it encompasses everything else that does not come from those areas.

The local sound or genres found in a specific country would be a possible definition of what the global sound really is. Classical Arab, Native Turkish, Marimba, Doo Wop, are all kinds of music that are found in different places on Earth and are all classified under the global sound. Like most cultures, there are cases where it would sound similar but there will always be factors that come in to play which makes the overall sound different.

It also differs in structure as compared to common pop sound. Certain scales or melodies are used for it. Different dynamics are applied as well. A guitar player from China may have a style different from a guitar player from the Philippines because of the different influences that they were exposed to as they were learning.

A key ingredient when making it is the instruments that are used. Each country has its own native instrument like the Kulintang for the Philippines and the Bagpipes for Scotland. Having these instruments at their disposal allows the musician to produce unique sounds and songs that can easily be likened to their nation.

A result of all these cultures opening up to each other is their sound mixing together as well. Genres such as Punk-ska or Reggae-rock have emerged from artists being influenced by the sound coming from other cultures. Latin Jazz and Acid blues are also the result of the global sound mixing together.

The local sound from another country would be the easiest way to coin world music. It has different styles, instruments, and melodies that have mixed together to form popular genres that we all listen to nowadays.
