How To Choose the Right Digital Camera For Kids

By Orsen Taylor

Choosing cameras for kids can seem complicated. Most adults struggle with using these cameras. Yet, kids often find it easy to learn these skills, and soon your child may know more about cameras than you.

Consider getting a digital camera capable of doing video since you're already shopping. Nowadays almost all digital cameras have a video function. This is not necessary if you are buying a young child his or her first camera, but older children will enjoy being able to shoot simple movies. For this reason video capabilities in a digital camera are a great function to have.

Parents looking at digital cameras for kids often start out looking in the toy section of a store. This is not the most effective approach for older kids however. There is a very small window of time in which your kids will be happy with toys given their increasing exposure to technology throughout their lives. The other factor is that the prices for entry level cameras are now so low that it's hardly any cheaper to buy toy cameras. Often you can find entry level cameras for under 20 bucks. So, when starting your kids off with digital cameras, you may want to bypass the toy stage altogether and just buy them a low priced adult camera.

A USB cable can also be very helpful as far as features go. If your child will want to share their pictures online, store them or print them on a computer a USB cable is helpful. Toy cameras are not likely to have this feature but most real ones will. No matter the age of your child they will want to be able to easily transfer pictures from one device to another. Just be sure the camera you choose has one. It may be necessary to purchase one separately in some cases.

Many digital cameras for kids are actually more advanced than many adult cameras of a few years ago. How advanced the camera is and how much you spend will depend on the age and experience of the kid who will be using it. We've looked at some helpful tips for finding the right digital camera for kids. Fortunately, recent advances in technology have made using cameras simpler in many ways.
