Top 5 Movies Ever!

By Frank Brady

City of God

This harrowing film is not just one of the best war movies, but one of the best movies ever made. Set during the Second World War, the movie follows the story of a German who, despite being a member of the Nazi Party, manages to save over a thousand Polish-Jewish men and women by employing them in his factory. The film won numerous Oscars, British Academy Awards and Golden Globes, although survivors of the Holocaust agree that no film can ever truly reflect the human suffering they experienced.

City of God

The harsh reality of living in the slums is brought to life not just by an excellent script (which was based on real events) but also by a cast made up of real children and men from the slums themselves. Set in Cidade de Deus (City of God), a slum on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, the story follows a group of friends over a couple of decades as their lives slowly but surely become entangles with organised crime and drugs.

Shindler's List

Time and time again, this movie has been at the top of 'best movie ever' polls. In simple terms, the story follows the story of a Nazi Party German who, through employing them in his factory, manages to save the lives of over a thousand Polish-Jews. The black and white cinematography and the shocking images of suffering make this film truly harrowing, with it understandable how this film won numerous Academy Awards, Golden Globes and British Academy Awards.

Avatar

With an all-star cast and an excellent soundtrack, nobody would disagree that this film is the best gangster movie ever made. Even real Mafia gangsters agree that the movies characters and storyline reflect the reality of their lives. There's no better accolade than that!

City of God

Our final film and it's back to the war. The Vietnam War, this time. As well as the all-star cast and realistic, brutal imagery, what makes this film so special compared with other war movies is that it tells a story that for many years was kept secret. Neither a pro- no anti-war film, the director, Francis Ford Coppola, describes it as an anti-lie film; bringing forward the truth about the war.
