I made the switch from boring old shirts and ties to funny Christmas t-shirts for kids last year for our seasonal, family photo and I do not regret it one bit! Our pictures came out so natural and organic, that I'm never going to do those rigid, posed pictures ever again. I would suggest doing the same to anyone else.
Making two five years olds put on shirts and ties and then stand still for at least an hour for the sake of a family portrait that they care very little about, is similar to giving a cat a bath. It's not easy to do, and it's going to be painful if you try. When I told the kids that they needed to get ready for last year's photo, the both groaned. Normally, we have gone to great pains to take a picture that is almost identical to the year before, just to show how much the children are growing up. Last year we got a reply from almost everyone we sent our cards to, and they were unanimously complimentary.
