LEGO Battle of Endor Sets - Fighting Stormtroopers on The Forest Moon

By Carlton T. Driver

As the Star Wars story unfolds, the Battle of Endor is a struggle which was not at all likely to be concluded in favor of the Rebels. The Empire had a seemingly unbeatable array of machines and weapons that should have given them the capability to smash any opponent - but, somehow, the Rebels and the Ewoks somehow managed to defeat the forces of the Empire that were arrayed against them, and even managed to destroy the Death Star. LEGO has recently released two different sets - LEGO Battle of Endor, and LEGO Ewok Attack, that give LEGO builders and Star Wars Fans a way to recreate this epic struggle on their bedroom floor.

Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, concludes the Star Wars middle trilogy with the story of the final battle that was waged by the Rebels and their Ewok allies against the forces of the Empire and the Dark Side. The battle begins as the Emperor Palpatine is supervising the construction of the Empire's ultimate weapon, the Death Star, being assembled in its orbit above the Moon of Endor.

When the Rebels learned from their spies that Palpatine would be present on the partially completed Death Star, they began to plot a major attack. Their sources were able to confirm that the defense systems of the incomplete station were not yet online. The key to the battle was to knock out the Death Star's defense shield control bunker located on the moon's surface.

The Rebels and the Ewoks managed to do this by combining luck and strategy, and in doing so, they were able to overcome the superior forces they were fighting. The main keys to winning the struggle were both capturing one of the AT-ST Walkers to use against the Storm Troopers, and a series of clever traps set up by the Ewoks. While Han Solo operated the AT-ST, using it against the Storm Troopers, they advanced on the Bunker. Once there, Solo, impersonating an Imperial Pilot, convinced the Imperial Forces that they needed to move out into the woods to chase the "retreating" Ewoks. This subterfuge gave them the chance to take control of the Bunker, and they destroyed it.

LEGO has produced two different sets that capture the key elements of this vital struggle. The larger of the two sets, called the LEGO Battle of Endor (LEGO 8038) provides for the construction of the Defense Shield Bunker, an AT-ST Walker (which has "walking action"), one Ewok Catapult, and two Imperial Speeder Bikes. The smaller set is the LEGO Ewok Attack (LEGO 7956), which builds the Ewok's tree fortification, and a Speeder Bike.

The larger set, Battle of Endor, contains a total of 890 pieces. It included twelve mini-figures, including Han Solo, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, several Ewoks, two Scout Troopers, two Rebel Commandos, and an Imperial Trooper. The set contains a number of interesting mechanical features. The AT-ST Walker can actually be made to "walk" - it is not simply a static model. The Bunker opens up to provide access to the interior. The Blast Doors of the bunker open by turning a gearing system, and the bunker itself has an "explosion feature" that allows it to be damaged by an "explosion". Also included in the set's construction details is an Ewok Catapult, which can throw a "stone" as far as six feet!

The smaller set, Ewok Attack, has 166 pieces, and although smaller still has some really neat elements to it. It recreates the Ewoks' Tree hideout, which is assembled onto two different base plates, which allows the tree to be opened to access the features inside. At the top of the tree is a mechanism which drops out "logs" to try to trip up the Walkers. There is also a catapult, and a flick-fire missile that can be launched from the interior of the tree.

Taken together, these two sets allow the user to re-create all the key aspects of the Battle of Endor. They make a wonderful combination gift for the Star Wars fan, and for the serious LEGO builder as well, but they also will provide good value as individual sets. These sets are a great example of the growing level of detail and realism that LEGO is incorporating into their dedicated sets. These improvements in turn create a lot of increased enjoyment for the users of these special sets.
