Where To Read Classic Literature Online

By Anna Awe

If you want to read classic literature online, you can use one of the major search engines - google, yahoo, or a similar engine. You can type the poem, book, or author you want to find, whether it be Robertson Davis, Gabriel Roy, Margaret Lawrence, Mazo de la Roche, or another Canadian classic author. If you are not looking for a specific book or author, you may browse the classics section of google books. To get the full text of the book you want to read, click the full view option. To find a book with google, type its title and add words like 'complete text', 'full text', transcript' or similar.

Check the format after finding the book you were looking for. Most electronic books contain chapters and you can go straight to the relevant passage or chapter of the book. If you choose to use google books, you may type a term, sentence, or passage you want to find. All pages containing the relevant passage or term will be shown.

Many websites offer free classic books to their readerships. You will find the readings listed by author name. You will see a sign near the title, which denotes whether you can read the full version of the text. Reviews and summaries of the books are also offered. These are useful in deciding whether you want to read a particular book. Some websites also feature a book of the day, highlighting particular readings every day.

Some free classic books websites, like the Classic Reader, feature sections that are intended for young readers and children. If you have children, you can spur their interest in classic readings by accessing them online. You can read together 'Adventures of Alice in Wonderland', 'The Jungle Book', 'Doctor Dolittle', and many others.

Check if you can adjust the size and font of the text. You may be able to zoom the text so that it is comfortable for the eyes. If you prefer to read the book in a hard-copy format, you can print the book or a chapter/ page of the text. Copy paste your selection of choice in a Microsoft Word document or use the print button. You can press the print button in the processing program to print a copy of the text.

Books come in various formats, the most popular being text, e-books, and HTML. Some books are offered in formats suitable for Kindle, Palm, iPhones, and other applications. You may be charged a fee for the service, but some websites offer free e-books.

Keep in mind that some classic books are still copyrighted, for example, the Lord of the Rings. You have to buy the e-book or book if you want to have it. Downloading a copyrighted book illegally is not a wise idea. Apart from breaking the law, you risk downloading malware and viruses.
