What is Rap Music?

The upward thrust of rap music began around 1976 in Black and Hispanic districts of NY City. There are numerous artist who could be considered as pioneers of rap music. In the decade, particularly round the turn of the millennium, rap music has changed considerably. The regular type of rappers, their musical style as well as the semantic themes are the most extreme changes that separate the Oldschool from the new-school age of rap music.

The regular practice of rappers has gradually become faster since the end of the old-school period. The regular structure of songs is more complex in new-school rap songs (e.g. in Rapsoul). There are several types of rhymes such as end rhymes, internal rhymes, solely to name a couple. The musical form of early outdated rap songs may appear monotonous and very simple technically.

Besides changes in style of music, rhythmical practice and changes of semantic themes in rap music, old-skool and new-school rap still share some common elements.

A crucial aspect which hasn't been mentioned yet here is that rap is one of the components of hiphop. Hip-Hop denotes a set of social practises, specifically break dancing, deejaying, rapping and graffiti writing. Each component of Hip-Hop depends on different performance modes, for example visible illustration (i.e. Graffiti writing), sound (i.e. Rapping), movement (i.,e. Break dancing), selecting, playing and mixing of tracks and turntable scratching (i.e. Deejaying).

Some laymen, rappers and music students consider Hip-Hop a class of music separate from rap music. There are several views on this point, nevertheless it is commonly accepted on the academic level that rap is an element of Hip-hop. In fact , Hip-hop is a lifestyle known internationally. However , Hip-Hop in different countries might contain some features of the North American Hip hop as a source. It may also contain features that my not definitely rely on its African roots.
