The ways in which James Bond film Casino Royale varied from the book

While 2006 007 Movie Casino Royale was the first to be closely based in an Ian Fleming book for many years, it's got many differences from the novel too. Ian Fleming's book is located totally in northwards France with the tiny exception of Bond's briefing by M, which is at the London headquarters of the British Secret Service.

The book takes place in the fictional French town of Royale-les-Eaux where the casino is located, a French infirmary and then in a small beach hotel where he recuperates after being released from infirmary.

Compare that with the film; Bond starts in Prague in the pre-titles sequence, then goes to Madagascar, London, the Bahamas, Miami, the Bahamas again, Montenegro and then Italy when he's hospitalised before heading to Venice with Vesper Lynd. France does not even get a mention!

Another tiny difference is the selection of poker in the flick rather than baccarat in the book. This does not actually change the dynamic of the plot at all, although many folks were initially disappointed that the filmmakers selected to capitalise on the acclaim of poker at the time.

There is another tiny difference concerning Bond girl Vesper Lynd. In the book she is being blackmailed into acting as a double agent by the KGB, who've threatened to kill her Polish lover, who they are holding, if she stops working for her; in the film her lover is apparently Algerian and she wears an Algerian Love Knot throughout the film, which was supposedly given to her by him.

However , one of the most surprising changes was that of Rene Mathis. Working for the French security service in the book, he is an MI6 station chief in the flick. He is a fantastic ally to Bond in the book, yet in the flick Bond is suspicious of him and he is dramatically tazered and taken off for interrogation.

It is a real shame that he was rubbed out in the chase up, Quantum of Solace, as his personality was always one of the best allies to appear and that was surprising he had never before appeared in any of the films.
