The Pioneer CDJ 2000 explored

By Jason Hermes

The Pioneer CDJ 2000, released back in 2009, remains one of the most popular types of digital turntables for professional DJs. It offers a range of stunning upgrades compared to other brands and even previous Pioneer CDJ models, which we will look at in more depth here.

The first and most obvious thing to look at is how the Pioneer CDJ 2000 looks at first glance. The styling of the unit is more retro than previous models in the range, such as the CDJ 800 or CDJ 1000, but it is still very slick and professional looking.

After waiting just a few seconds for the Pioneer CDJ 2000 to boot up and for a disc to load and play, the huge colour LCD screen on the unit shows the wave display of the track. If you plan to play tracks from SD cards or external USB devices, this display will only be created bit-by-bit. However, this should only be an issue for DJs who rely heavily on this wave display to get through their set.

The faders, switches, buttons and knobs on the Pioneer CDJ 2000 unit are solidly reassuring, in a way that we've come to expect from the Pioneer CDJ brand. You'll also find that the huge display is well laid-out on the Pioneer CDJ 2000, making it very easy to use.

You will also notice a few extra-special features on the Pioneer CDJ 2000. First up is the Rekordbox music database management system which provides you with a great way to prepare tracks ahead of your set and to be creative with your playlists. There is also the Needle Search/Needle Drop Ribbon feature, a touch-sensitive bar which allows you to scroll and skip through the track playing.

Overall, the Pioneer CDJ 2000 is a fantastic product, albeit one best suited to advanced DJs who are able to exploit its potential to the fullest.
