James' Singing is Emotional, Says Ex-Director

James Durbin is enjoying himself in the spotlight as one of the five finalists of the prestigious talent show, American Idol. This young rock singer from the Santa Cruz, California has proven himself and skill to the judges as well as to the voting public. With all those fame surrounding him, you could help but wonder: who was this guy before he attained the spotlight in Idol? His former director, Wil Guilford of the Louden Nelson Community Center, shares some of the past of this exceptionally talent singer.

It's a fact that Durbin is orphaned of his father, musician Willy Durbin who died when the James was just 9 years old. It's also known that James suffers from Asperger's Syndrome as well as Turret's Syndrome. The latter condition makes him suffer from tics, which director Guilford says are "more pronounced" while James is "waiting for the judges" during the show.

"You'll notice during Idol, when he's waiting for the judges. his ticks will be more pronounced," Guilford says of Durbin's Turret syndrome. "[B]ut when he sings, it all goes away," he adds.

Aside from the Louden Nelson Community Center and Guilford, Durbin has also been trained by former Doobie Brothers' guitarist/keyboardist Dave Ockerman, throug his Musicscool institution.The singer has performed with Ockerman's Beatles tribute band, The White Ensemble. In December 2008, he appeared with them on stage to perform the song "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." Durbin received a standing ovation from the audience after the conclusion of his performance of the song.

Indeed, Durbin is well on his way to becoming a star. Being a finalist of the American Idol, there is a lot of things for him to look forward to along the way.
