Black and White, a Perfect Combination

By Shawn Smith

Creativity is hidden inside all of us, we just have to use our imaginations and come up with a result after much deliberation of thoughts inside your mind. In photography, colours could either be used or not to show the beauty of the picture. Using the black and white in taking pictures can leave a dynamic impact on the viewers as the shape, lighting, contrast, texture and tone were the dominant elements.

But how do we reach a picture full of feelings using the light, contrast and grey tones only? Easy, practice and more practice. Black and white expert photographers can convey a stunning world without color by training their mind to pick up contrast and tone while disregarding the colour. Practice hard by getting photographs with only black and white; surely you'll get a hold of it quicker than you expect it.

Black and white photography is fundamentally all about the black and white tones and as a photographer; the primary objective is to make your point with shades of grey. Using contrast to show the viewers what's significant and what's not. Look for scenes or subjects that naturally show signals of high contrast and your photograph will be more important from the beginning.

Black and white photographs actually lend themselves to textures because color generally adds another layer of intricacy thus masking most subtle textures. Looking at it, texture is a pattern of shadows and highlights at numerous intensities. It's just a type of contrast understood in a different way.

Outstanding photographs aren't 100% natural; it also needs some help from our technology. Studying how to edit and use Photoshop is also necessary in enhancing a picture because not all of the required adjustments can be made in the camera. If you are able to perfect this, you can then consider the possibility of becoming a professional photographer.
