The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Private Schools Uniforms

By Paulette Perkins

For many years, the problem of right dress attire in learning institutions has constantly been debated. Most public schools do not insist on this, but their private counterparts do. There are, however, merits and demerits of private schools uniforms.

Let us look at the advantages first. Having a proper dress code in a learning institution allows for student equality and boosts self-esteem. Students feel like they are part of a community, and this raises their self-esteem levels. When students feel equal, they are less likely to divide themselves into groups. Because of this, the number of gangs being formed in a school reduces.

A further benefit is increased discipline within the school. Plenty of people who support the use of uniforms argue that they constantly remind the students of the school rules and regulations that have to be followed. Studies have also revealed that in establishments where students have a proper dress code, they cannot wear gang colors. This leads to a decrease of gang activities around the school area.

Reduced peer pressure is also another merit of having a dress code in schools. The gap between the haves and the have-nots is reduced when the dress code is the same. In institutions where this is not endorsed, students are pressured to wear clothes that are in fashion. Failure to do so may cause one to be alienated and bullied.

Looking at the disadvantages, the cost stands out. Most people will argue that school attire cost less than most outfits, especially designer outfits. While this may be true, one should consider that students will only wear these clothes during school related activities. They will still want to wear their other clothes when at home. Thus, the added cost of uniforms discourages most schools from adopting them.

Another demerit is that private schools uniforms restrict student individuality. Most students convey their personality through their clothes. Taking this away from them limits the development as individuals.
