Well-Crafted Trailers: An Effective Tool to Draw Audience

By Kevin Fernandez

Previews are the best tools to evoke the interest of the public and interest them into watching the film. In India, Bollywood previews occupy a special place of their own in the movie industry. Even before the film is released, previews will be screened in cinema halls where other films are being shown, in the intervals of prime time programs in Television and of late, online also. Almost all big production companies develop special websites for their big budget films and upload movie clips, trailers, trivia and songs.

The principal aim of creating a trailer is to elicit the curiosity among the audience. Properly laid out arrangement of scenes, interesting sequences and songs must be clubbed in a trailer which could interest people. Since songs and background score are an inevitable part of any Hindi film, all Bollywood trailers also have a healthy helping of these. In point of fact, a few Bollywood films make film lovers go crazy even before the film is released in cinema halls because they might be excited about a song or a sequence shown in the trailer.

Bollywood trailers are also employed by producers to offer audiences a quick glance at the highlights of the movie. A trailer tells the viewer about the various interesting parts he will find when he sees the full movie such as action, comedy or pathos. Some trailers offer the audience the gist of the film so that he is drawn to watching the film to see how the scenario unfolds. Audiences are also given an opportunity to see the style and cinematography of the movie through trailers. Producers display snapshots of beautiful foreign places, visually appealing photography and beautiful shots which can be clubbed in a trailer. The overall feel of the movie can be conveyed very effectively through these film 'nuggets'.

Films with a message in them will also have previews conveying the same message. This is helpful for the director and the producer as their communication with the public becomes simpler and trouble free as the public easily connect with the message used in the film. In case of movies which have social issues, this idea, indeed, works well. Whether it is a serious social theme or a typical Bollywood mega hit action film, Bollywood trailers are an unavoidable part of Hindi film industry.

It is well understood by the producers and film directors that a hastily and inadequately made trailer can dampen the excitement level of the public and it can also impact the rush at the box office. That is why film trailers are given greater care and importance when compared to the past.
