How To Become A Travel Photographer

By Amalia Buchanan

A career filled with excitement, exotic destinations and wonderful people; this is what most people think of when they imagine the life a travel photographer must be living. And they are not far off. It is an exciting career but it also makes some stressful demands and requires skills which take discipline to acquire. For one, such a professional needs to be able to learn about people and cultures, needs patience and has to be passionate about the work.

Their works are usually identified with such prominent landmarks as the Taj Mahal, Eiffel tower and the Statue of Liberty. Nevertheless their selling point lies in their ability to capture those things that seem very common, and present them in such unique manners that sets a nerve of the beholder on fire. Be it a frail looking woman in the desert or a group of dolphins doing their thing off the coast of the Indian ocean, two lovebirds in a village in Mongolia, or a snowman with a broken nose, the lens man has a unique way capturing their shot with the aid of what could be considered a third eye.

Despite the fact that their pictures are marked by exotic destinations, most people in this career pick a genre and go with it. Therefore it is not uncommon to see one who focuses mostly on cultural weddings in different parts of the world or some other targeted niche.

The field is quite wide and while there are some who practice freelance, there are others who are attached to media houses. In the same way, some prefer to focus on disaster areas where there are earthquakes or civil wars. They get exposed to so many dangers and for them, that is the thrill of the career. They are actually journalists who do their reporting from behind a camera lens.

Most who work in this field however, work freelance and do it for the love of it. They are not often attached to any media houses and sell their pictures for healthy sums. There are those though that are able to get sponsorship so that they can keep doing what they love without worrying about their expenses.

Becoming a travel photographer could be an exciting career. Like every career, you need to be prepared and this could involve taking lessons in photography. It could also mean working with an established professional. Either way, it is a wonderful way to see the world.
