Favorite Movie Podcasts

By Robert Somerville

Movie podcasts are a superb way to stay in contact with current movie releases and to hear engaging and entertaining reviews of both current releases and older classic films.

The key platform for subscribing and receiving your favorite movie podcasts is Apple iTunes and the mobile devices which make it so simple to listen to podcasts are, of course, the iPhone or the iPad. After subscribing to a podcast in iTunes, it is straightforward to transfer that podcast to the iPhone or iPad to listen to whenever at your leisure.

BBC 5 Live - Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo

The first movie podcast I ever subscribed to is the BBC 5 Live Movie show with Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo. Mark Kermode is a highly regarded movie critic in the UK and he has a weekly film review slot on Simon Mayo's radio program on BBC Radio five Live. Simon is the host of the programme and while he has an opinion about some of the movies being discussed, it is principally Mark Kermode who contributes the majority of the movie discussion.

Mark Kermode has a wealth of opinion about most movies and is a real critic in every sense of the word. While he will, at certain times be exceedingly critical, his reviews are typically balanced based on an intensive understanding of movies. The podcasts is always current as they reviews currently ranking in the top 10 in the UK each week together with ad hoc reviews of movies that have caught the notice of Mark Kermode in the week.

Filmspotting.net - Adam Kempenaar and Matty (Ballgame) Robinson

Having been hot for the BBC 5 Live podcasts, I at last went searching for other film-related podcasts that could be equally as enjoyable. While I tried a couple of others, I at last stuck with the superb weekly podcast by Adam Kempenaar and Matty Robinson from Filmspotting.net. It was clear from the start this podcast would be a winner and I couldn't believe that it had been available for one or two years and I was not conscious of it! Both Adam and Matty are similarly devoted in their love of movies and this show is a real debate between two similarly passionate film lovers.

Each week Adam and Matty select a current movie to critically review and their often contrasting positions often makes for a captivating discussion. They overtly say that they do not run the show just to review the movies of the week and even some high visibility movies appear and vanish without mention on this show. The smartest thing I can say about the filmspotting.net podcast is I have learned more about movies in general and different movies in particular from listening to this show than the rest I have listened to or read. This is because when Adam and Matty debate a movie, they almost always make references to other movies they feel are pertinent and are consistently creating inventories of top five movies in different genres or years. I follow up on these movies and have become much more informed and aware of the important movies within the main film genre's.

Listening to these movie podcasts is something I most anticipate in any specific week so if your hobbies includes watching great cinema then I highly advise you to add these movie podcasts to your regular iTunes subscriptions.
