How To Select From Potential Photographers

By Sandra McMahon

Selecting a photographer for your family photos is an important undertaking. Good photographs are an investment in your family memories and not all photographers are created equal. I have included a few important criteria to review to assure you find the best photographer for your needs.

One of the most important criteria is to select an artist who has plenty of experience with the style of photography you want. You may not want to hire a wedding specialist to take pictures of you family. Each setting has it's own unique criteria that requires experience with that medium.

It's equally important that you find someone who has specialized training in post processing and photo finishing. A good photographer will spend much more time digitally finishing and perfecting photos after the actual photo session is completed. These programs require hundreds of hours of study and practice to master so research the specific skills of the photographers your considering.

You will also want to consider your time frame. Many professional photographers have limits on session time and charge extra for weekends and evening sessions. Thus, consider your schedule when interviewing potential candidates.

Never underestimate your gut feel about their work. Review as much of their work as time allows and if it strikes you, then the artist may be a good fit. You should have a feeling of wow. Professional photographs can be very expensive and you will want work you can be extremely proud of so review their work.

Make sure you like the person. This may be most important. When working with a photographer you will probably have to take direction from them and trust that they know what they are doing. This trust factor is negated if you don't like them first.

Finally, don't be afraid to conduct interviews with your potential candidates. Many customers remain loyal to their photographers for many years so put a diligent amount of work into choosing the best custom photographer for you.
