Hindi Film Industry and the Last Few Years

By Katherine Kelly

The period commonly correlated with modern Indian cinema is supposed to have begun in 1970's when commercial cinema came forth as a means of entertainment for the general public and this continues with the contemporary Indian movie industry today. Although directors like Govind Nihilani, Shyam Benegal and others kept the flame of artistic movies alive, the commercial cinema surpassed the artistic cinema by a huge margin.

The influence of mainstream movie industry kept on growing in 1980s and 1990s. With the release of movies like Kayamat se Kayamat Tak, Chandni, Tezaab and Maine Pyaar Kiya in 1980's and Darr, Baazigar and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge in 1990's, the trend of romantic movies grew. These mushy movies were usually love stories of young couples who end up living happily ever after. Few of them were big successes commercially and broke all records at the box office.

The era of romantic cinema continued to late 1990s and start of 2000s when movies like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and others were big commercial blockbusters. But, the later half of 1990's saw the comeback of artistic cinema and movies like Satya and Chandni Bar got a lot of appreciation from the critics. Such new releases were a welcome change from the love stories that were being released every Friday and had a strong impact on the Bollywood movie fans.

Many recent mainstream movies such as Mein aur Mrs Khanna and Veer were flops at the box office, and surprisingly, movies with tight budgets such as Dev D have done very well. This rising trend has encouraged novel plots for modern Bollywood movie among directors and producers.

The new trend in Bollywood movie industry is to come up with novel storylines and ideas. Recently released movies like My Name is Khan and 3 Idiots had original themes and have been huge successes at the box office. The new Indian movies are starting the trend of making various kind of movies that is striking chord with present day Bollywood movie goers.
