By Elise Clayton

Turn the dial to get to the frequency you want. In no time, you will hear sounds coming out of the speakers. When it reaches your ears, you could always turn the dial again if you do not really like what you are hearing. There are different radio stations Connecticut has for its listeners.

Whether you are online or you have your very own receiver with you, you could always be sure that you would have plenty of choices. You, as a listener, can always tune in or tune out, as you please. To entice listeners to stay in the same frequency, programmers make sure that there is a good match with the format and target audience. Here are only a couple of what can be heard over the airwaves.

You could go with the oldies. For this, it is more appropriate to call it golden hits format. This is quite broad in terms of the eras that they can add to their playlist. You could start with the 50's and end with the 90's selection. Tunes that are considered gold are the ones that can be heard with this programming.

There is the personality format. Music can still be heard over this but not as much as other music-intensive frequencies. Entertainment is achieved by letting certain types of personalities be the host, co-host or the guest for their shows. Current events may be parodied and commented on.

You could go with rock. This is also a broad format to go with. There are plenty of genres and sub genres that belong under this format. It could even be categorized according to which era the songs played belong to. Its format tends to fall within the various stylistic ranges.

You may have the smooth jazz format. This is designed to set a mood of calm and relaxation to its listeners. It is not really designed to invite listeners to really tune in and be active in listening. This is meant to have a more easy going and relaxed atmosphere.

You may have the standards. This type of format plays any song for the past 60 years that is not classified under rock. It may be the popular mainstream music of the previous eras. It could even include recent interpretations of the standards from a certain period.

There is the urban format. Soul and hip-hop are only a few of the genres that can be found on its programming. These are targeted to pique the interest of young adults and teenagers, as they are the target audience. For adding more appeal to adults, soul and r and b hits around 20 years older or more could be added.

Those are only a couple of the formats that can be heard from the various radio stations Connecticut. With such a diverse selection, you may end up having one choice for every time your mood changes. But, to stick to just one, make sure you understand your personality and your tastes to keep your dial on one frequency.
