Why Plain Backdrops Are Ideal For Still Life Photographs

Plain backdrops are commonly used for product photography. There is a strong need for product photographers to ensure that the product stands out. Hence, the subject should be isolated as much as possible from any distractions.

The thought in the last sentence exactly captures the essence of using a plain backdrop photography capturing product images. This kind of backdrop is really simple but it can help hugely in concealing all the distracting clutter in the background.

It matters to keep the background clean and free of clutter because it helps in directing the customer's attention toward the most important element of the photograph: the product.

A plain, white or black photography backdrop in the form of sheet is also a great way of photographing large items that are for sale. This particular type of backdrop tells any product photographer that there is no other way to block out the background but only through a plain sheet.

It is crucial to take note though the importance of keeping the sheet wrinkle-free. Being conscious of this necessity helps a photographer achieve a smooth, flat and wrinkle-free background. Photographers that are working in a temporary studio will also find this type of backdrop really helpful. For instance, a garage-turned-studio will require a backdrop that can readily and effortlessly cover other areas with jammed items.

Solid white and black backdrops will have a little impact on the subject. This makes them ideal for various photography purposes. Colors from the backdrop may bounce back to the product. When this is combined with a poor lighting skill, it can cause change in color or worst, distortion in appearance and hue. Moreover, colored backgrounds can clash with the colors of your subject.

As a general rule, select a photography backdrop that does not compete in drawing the interest of the audience or the buyers. Black, white, gray and dark blue backdrops work effectively most of the time.
