Oscar Nominated Movies In Hindi Film Industry

Hindi movie industry is another name for the film industry, which produces a lot of Hindi films yearly. The fame of churning out the highest number of films in India goes to Hindi movie industry. There are many movies produced in Hindi film industry, which have been at par with many international films, that they were selected for the Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars.

Such an admired and popular movie is Mother India. It was Mehboob Khan who gave fresh faces to the characters of his earlier film Aurat (1940) and created this film. Narrating the social set up in early India, this film featured Nargis Dutt and Sunil Dutt in the main roles. Nargis portrays the character of a village woman always holding on to her principles, despite the difficulties in her life. However she kills her son, in the end, to keep her promise to the landlord. In 1958, this film contested with four other foreign films in the category of Best Foreign language films. Mother India is the representation of India after it got freedom and became the 1st Indian movie to compete with other movies from foreign countries.

Salaam Bombay! became the second film to be chosen from India at the Oscars from the long list of other movies in Bollywood. This movie was produced in 1988 and narrated an in-depth story of Mumbai's (then Bombay) street children. The film has received numerous awards in a lot of national and international film festivals. Montreal World Film Festival, the National Film Award for the Best Feature film and Golden Camera Award (Cannes Film Festival) were some of the awards given for this film, directed by Mira Nair.

Lagaan with Amir Khan in the lead role was the 3rd official entry from India to the reputed Oscars. The film, released in 2001, depicted India under the British Raj in the Victorian era. Lagaan tells a village, which unites to voice out their protest against the increase in taxation by the British Government. The movie directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, with a budget of 250 million rupees also had many British actors Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker within a huge budget (250 million rupees), this film had some English movie actors too.

Water (directed by Deepa Mehta) became India's 4th entry to the Oscars in the category of Best Foreign Language Film. With the backdrop of India of 1938, the film looks at the lives of many widows in Varanasi. The movie featuring Vinay Pathak, Liza Ray, Raghubir Yadav and John Abraham, caught the public eye because of its content.

Rang De Basanti, directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, brought the current India to the silver screen through the story of a few students attending college. This progressive movie brings the revolutionary faces of the passive students, who are fed up with the corrupt system. This movie could impact a lot of young students, who wanted the system to change. This film got nominated at the Oscars after competing with other films in Bollywood.
