How A Los Angeles Belly Dancer Learns To Perform With A Sword

By Marsha Silva

If you are a Los Angeles belly dancer trying to find a unique way to spice up your act and intrigue your audience, performing with a sword may be something you should try. Many performers use props when they dance, but incorporating a sword brings a sense of danger and excitement that other types of props may not. There are a number of things to think about and practice before you actually introduce a sword into your act.

One of the most important aspects of the act is choosing the proper sword. It should balance easily and naturally in your hand. If you have trouble balancing it in your hand, it will be even harder to balance it on your head. The heavier a sword is the easier it is to work with. Try choosing a sword with a thick blade that has not been sharpened instead of a sword with a sharp thin blade.

Check out how the sword balances on your costume's fabric. Your prop may work perfectly well on your bare skin, but slip and slide on certain types of fabric.

Hairspray can be a good tool to help you learn how to balance a sword on your head. The stickiness of the spray will help hold the prop in place as you dance.

There are performers who try to use shortcuts to impress their audiences. They may modify or manipulate a sword to make it easier to balance it on their bodies. Some use elaborate headdresses to try to fool the audience into thinking that they are really balancing the prop themselves. All of this destroys credibility and turns away audiences.

The decision about whether or not to wear any kind of headdress may depend mostly on where you are dancing. If you are outside, the least amount of wind can easily unbalance your sword. A headdress will help keep the prop where it should be under these circumstances. If you are dancing inside, there is really no need for head gear. It will seem more realistic to your audience if you dance without it.

A Los Angeles belly dancer who makes the decision to include an exotic prop into her act has a real advantage over the other dancers in her field. She will excite and delight audiences and bring them back again and again.
