Use Of Chroma Keying In Green Screen Process To Add Any Background

By Trevor Weir

I would like to tell you about the use of chroma keying in green screen process so that you have all the information you need to understand all terms used. There are many uses for the coloured whether for photograph or film software. There is software that makes your job easier but without the knowledge it may all seem like a foreign language.

Chroma keying is not the only name that this kind of programming is known by. It is also known as colour keying for a very good reason. This is that you put two screens together, the one being the green screen, and then to the screen you can add pictures or people to the front or back of the frame or picture.

In such modern times as I am sure you can imagine there are many circumstances where chroma keying can come in handy. One that everyone will have seen is the weather report where the reporter is standing in front of a seemingly large map. This is where the green screen comes into play and the chroma keying is what is used to add the images. If the reporter was to wear the same colour as the screen behind that item would take on the picture so they would look as though they were wearing part of it. Another use is combining animation to films and the background to video games.

This is great for putting a person or character on the moon or in the sun without them actually having to go there. You can put characters into a film that have never set foot on the set and all that is needed is clever lighting, a computer and a green backdrop.

To make the programming both understandable to those who are applying the pictures or frames as well as the computer. The way this is done is through certain codes. There is a code for each pixel and these can be represented by letters, by numbers or maybe all of them. There are also different codes used for referring to the green screen or whether you are referring to the image in front or behind

Different references are used by different programmes which is why I could only give an example. You can alter the references with some programmes and of course if you know what you are doing. To alter the images you should be aware that it is only with these designated codes that changes can be made. This is made easier with certain programmes.

Now that the digital world seems to have many more benefits over film it seems that more people are using it. To get the best from your editing it is better to use the green screen rather than the blue as the end result has better clarification which makes for better viewing. To make sure you get the look you want there may be circumstances where you have to use a different colour screen such as a red or blue one. This is so that colours do not clash.
