Film And Digital Photography

By Valentine Speich

Films are no longer the preferred media for photography. But we must take a look at some hidden benefits films may had over photography. Now, we shall talk about the advantages and disadvantages of film and digital photography. Quality Picture Production

In terms of digital photography, the aspect of pixels dictating the quality of the picture plays a role. Take for a instance, a particular photograph might be 900x440 pixels. In digital photography, pixels compose the colors that make up the picture. In the end, a picture is entirely made up small dots.

Films do not suffer from pixellations as often may be the case with digital photographs. Exposure plays a very heavy role in films. Films, therefore, are able to portray curved images much better. Pixels can only do its best to reproduce a curve, while films reproduce accurate curves. It doesn't mean negatives produce better resolutions that digital ones, it's only that pixel do not apply to it.

Quality Images

You may find it interesting that film photographs require the action of two chemical reactions. The first one is exposure to light to transfer images on the negatives. Light is again used to transfer images into paper. So much could go wrong during this phase. One problem could go wrong during the negative exposures. Second problem would be paper deterioration.

You can't do film restoration if these two problems has already occurred. Without access to the originals, restoration is next to impossible. The only thing left to do, from then on, is to process a copied image. Having the originals ensures reproducing true copies.

Digital photography may not be immune to problems. Something may go wrong during the production of the digital image. Image resolutions can not go as higher as the original one but be lowered though. Printing isn't exactly a safe process for digital. Pair up quality pictures with quality printers. Quality is greatly affected by it.

Film and digital photography may share common similarities as well as differences.
