The dog is guardian of the shadowy land between life and death, according to one artist. This female artist first explored the symbolic meaning of shadow dogs in a series of black and white paintings and monotypes on display at the local restaurant located on their main street. The country has already seen many of the works this artist with a fine arts degree from a university in New Mexico. She has gained awards in various mediums such as fabrics, photography and printmaking.
From dogs this artist turned the tables and went to frogs. Measuring 10 feet tall her work is made of steal. A young girl's fascination with frogs was what she called her work.
She also studied about the non rational states of consciousness. There are definite links to certain shamanistic beliefs in my work especially that of the ability of a human and an animal to collaborate by combining forms, she said. It is very important that we return back to the old ways of how to survive in order to make civilization exist longer. She added that we are at a point in time when cooperation with other forms of life becomes more than ever necessary.
Looking at the monoprints she has with dogs it is clear that collaboration is there. Working at a local humane society and getting photos for local news is what she is busy with. In terms of the stray dogs out on the street she herself has four.
There animals are all over her monoprints. With this she has to work rapidly making sure she does everything all at once. In this case it is important to work double time. Here one is really physically challenge.
The initial figure might always change compared to the outcome. Direct and unsentimental is how her work is seen by many.
As it is, she manages to insert humor and fun into the picture she creates. Many times her paintings would always be of dogs yawning, sleeping in the grass, portrayed with their heads lost in a culvert or a can of kibble.
The artist also says that titles are very essential. No need to confuse yourself with the story to find it funny. Some owners would also ask her to do dog portraits for them. Having a business with her husband allows her to work with him closely.
